However porting HTML5 to other platforms is a mixed bag and will almost always perform worse, with less native functionality available, than Unity will. You aren't depending on black magic converters and unreadable code. If you want to make a 2D browser only game, you are almost always better to work in the native language, especially when it comes to supporting (debugging) real and future browsers. Need the tooling support or want to target multiple platforms, go Unity.

With Unity, other developers must have the Unity tool and possibly the Pro version if I use any pro features. If I want to Open Source my game, anyone can use it.

With the deprecation of NPAPI, Unity's only option is WebGL, which still has a number of limitations compared to the Unity Webplayer. It's very easy to get people to try your game. For indie developers, I think having a zero-step barrier to entry is a huge bonus.
